McCody Concrete is a diversified concrete products and construction services company located in Williston, N.D. In an effort to keep up with their customers’ demands and combine multiple businesses under one roof, the owner devised a plan to construct a new industrial/ warehouse and office building to fit their needs. Upon completion, this 90,000-square-foot facility will feature a three-story office building and use more than 7,000 yards of concrete. A total of 150 tilt-up panels will be used on the new facility. The panels range in size from 6 to 40 feet in width, 3 to 43 feet in height and 2,000 to 110,000 pounds. When the General Contractor, C.E. Doyle, LLC - a full service design-build contractor specializing in tilt-up, masonry, and steel construction - needed an economical and efficient way to design the tilt-up panels for this project, especially with multiple anticipated changes, they used Tilt-Werks, the web-based software developed by Tilt-Up Design Systems, LLC.

As with previous C.E. Doyle projects designed using Tilt-Werks, the solution for this project came in the form of panel reinforcing design, panel shop and reinforcing design drawings and panel lift engineering analysis generated using Tilt-Werks. Material summary reports, generated by the software, were also used to facilitate the construction process.

Because of the major flooding in North Dakota in late June of 2011, there were several challenges for this project to begin construction. “The unfortunate flooding that occurred created difficulties for the construction schedule and working conditions,” said Craig Olsen, Project Engineer, C.E. Doyle. “There were also several changes on a daily basis, which were implemented to ensure the needs of the owner were met. With these two obstacles in mind, having the Tilt-Werks system was crucial. It allowed us to produce new drawings as needed and allowed us to get back on track with each change.”

With a total project value of $10 million, the facility will provide a new manufacturing/warehouse and office space for McCody Concrete. The project began in June, 2011 and is slated for completion in the fall of 2012.
